Welcome to the Biosphere Reserve "Karstlandschaft Südharz"!
Covering approximately 30,000 hectares, the Biosphere Reserve "Karstlandschaft Südharz" is a unique natural landscape in southern Saxony-Anhalt. Characterised by vast beech forests, species-rich dry grasslands, and impressive karst formations, this reserve is a true gem. The region is marked by dolines, sinkholes, caves, and stream sinks, which have formed through the soluble rocks of the Zechstein karst. The reserve is home to numerous rare animal and plant species, including wildcats, fire salamanders, and orchids. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it balances nature conservation with sustainable development, preserving traditional land use forms such as orchard meadows and extensive grazing. Visitors are invited to explore the geological and biological diversity of the area on hiking trails and in information centres.
